Just
as sailors made long circuitous journeys, so did their chanteys. The
text we use is Barry Finn’s (U.S.), who heard the song from a Polish
chantey singer, who in turn got it from Roy Harris (U.K.). Roy found the
tune and a fragmentary text on a recording in the Robert W. Gordon
collection at the Library of Congress. Just as Roy and Barry have
provided verses today, so did the sailors and collectors in their day.
